Insider Hacks

Verified Texas DMV Tips

🎯 Registration Hack

Before heading to the Tax Assessor-Collector, ensure your vehicle is inspected (if in an emissions county) and your auto insurance is active. Texas requires proof of liability insurance meeting State of Texas minimum requirements.

⚠️ Tax Warning

Beware the 'Standard Presumptive Value' (SPV) trap on private-party sales! If you buy a used car from a private seller for $2,000, but the vehicle's SPV is $10,000, the tax assessor-collector will calculate your 6.25% sales tax on 80% of that SPV ($8,000 = $500 in tax), not on the $2,000 you actually paid. Note: the SPV value shown to the public on TxDMV's own site is the full 100% figure -- the county assessor applies the 80% calculation internally, so don't be alarmed if the public tool shows a higher number than what you're taxed on. You can submit a certified appraisal within a limited window after purchase to challenge the assessed value if you believe it's inaccurate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Texas have a property tax (Ad Valorem) on cars?
No. Texas is one of the states that does not charge an annual property tax on vehicles. You only pay standard flat registration, processing, and local county fees each year.
How much is the Texas Electric Vehicle (EV) fee?
Fully electric vehicles are subject to a $200 annual fee to make up for lost gas tax revenue. If you are buying a brand new EV, you are required to pay for the first two years upfront ($400).
How much is the car sales tax in Texas?
The Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax is exactly 6.25% statewide. Unlike normal goods, there are no local city or county sales taxes added to car purchases in Texas.
Do I need an inspection before registering my car in Texas?
Non-commercial vehicles registered in one of the 17 emissions counties (Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson) are required to obtain a passing emissions inspection prior to registration. Bexar County (San Antonio) joins this list starting November 1, 2026. All non-commercial vehicles statewide also pay a $7.50 Inspection Program Replacement Fee, regardless of county.
How is sales tax calculated on a used car bought from a private seller in Texas?
For private-party sales only (not dealer purchases), Texas calculates the 6.25% tax on whichever is greater: the price you actually paid, or 80% of the vehicle's Standard Presumptive Value (SPV). If you paid less than 80% of SPV and believe that's unfair, you can submit a certified appraisal to the county tax assessor-collector to use your actual price instead.
