Alaska Car Registration Calculator& DMV Fee Breakdown
Vehicle Information
Note: Values depend on official state valuation models.
Calculations are estimates and do NOT include the Motor Vehicle Registration Tax (MVRT) that some boroughs charge. MVRT is a real, confirmed tax, but it is tiered by vehicle AGE (e.g. Anchorage/Mat-Su: roughly $150 biennial for a new car, dropping to around $110 by year 4 and lower for older cars; Juneau uses a separate, more gradually-tapering schedule), and this calculator does not yet collect a model year input needed to compute it. Confirmed participating areas: Anchorage, Matanuska-Susitna (shared schedule), and Juneau (separate schedule). Whether Fairbanks North Star or Kenai Peninsula participate in MVRT has not been independently confirmed.
Standard Registration Fees
Base Tag Fee (2-Year Registration)
$100.00
Title Transfer
$15.00
County millage rates shown below are county-wide averages for illustration. Actual rates vary by city and school district within a county — confirm your exact rate with your local License Commissioner or Revenue Commissioner before budgeting an exact amount.
Penalty Note: Alaska registers vehicles biennially (every 2 years) and does not offer a grace period for driving. If your tags expire and you renew less than 12 months later, the DMV will charge you the full 2-year fee retroactively starting from your expiration month. If expired more than a year, the process starts completely anew.
Insider Hacks
Verified Alaska DMV Tips
🎯 Registration Hack
The Senior Exemption: If you are an Alaskan resident who is 65 or older, state law allows you to register one vehicle permanently with no registration or MVRT fees collected (you only pay title fees). You must explicitly claim this exemption at the DMV.
⚠️ Tax Warning
Avoid the $10 'Walk-In' penalty. The Alaska DMV actively tries to keep lines short by penalizing in-person visits. If you renew your registration in person at a DMV office rather than doing it online or by mail, they will add a $10 fee to your total.
